Murals have been around forever, but in the past couple of years, street artists have begun to work on large scale surfaces more and more, often with permission and with the help of ladders, cranes and lifts. The results are artworks in heights barely reached before and the freedom to take more time to finish, which in turn leads to detailed artworks that interact with architecture and structures. This phenomenon is now also well-established in Vienna thanks to the many initiatives, galleries, agencies and curators that make our downtown spaces more vibrant, colourful and beautiful. Vienna is full of artworks both from local and international artists, offers plenty of legal space to paint on and local governments also support this art form more and more. There are lots of different manifestations of public art and street art but this guide focuses on murals as there is currently an incredible dynamic in this art form in Vienna. This guide’s ambition is neither to be complete nor finished; it is rather a documentation of some selected artworks as found in early summer of 2017 which Vienna Murals thinks you should take a closer look at when walking the streets of this city. Als Working Tools wurden Kategorien zu den unterschiedlichen Vorgangsweisen erstellt, die nach ihrem Modus geordnet wurden, als symbolträchtige Icons dienten Stencils, die im Grazer Stadtraum entdeckt wurden.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDer Begriff „uncurated“ ist Pidgin-Englisch, er existiert nicht im englischen Sprachgebrauch. Es ist ein selbstironischer Kommentar zu den gespreizten Worthülsen, die von Kurator*innen für ihre Ausstellungsprojekte kreiert werden. Und vordergründig ist er auch mit Kuratorenschaft bzw. ihrer Absenz zu assoziieren, aber ebenso schwingen Bedeutungen wie „ungepflegt“ und „vernachlässigt“ mit.\u003cbr\u003eDamit ist schon die wesentliche Absicht angesprochen, und zwar, den meist unauffälligen Eintragungen im öffentlichen Raum Aufmerksamkeit zu widmen, unauffällig, weil sie zwischen den viel lauteren Werbeeinschaltungen ausgeblendet und übersehen werden.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo zeigt eben auch Graz im Piano nobile die bezahlte Werbung, Plakate auf Litfaßsäulen, City Lights an Haltestellen und leuchtende Billboards an großen Kreuzungen, während im Parterre die meist anonymen Botschaften Verbreitung finden, Sticker entlang von Dachrinnen und an Pfosten, gesprayte Schriftkürzel, Schablonenbilder und Malereien auf Mauern, an Hauseingängen und Häusersockeln, Bahndämmen und an den funktionalen Teilen der Stadtmöblierung wie Stromkästen und Trafohäuschen. Hat man erst einmal Witterung aufgenommen, wird man in Graz kaum einen Schritt machen können, ohne diese geheime Welt aus Schriften, Bildern und Aufklebern ergründen zu wollen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDie Stadt wird aber nicht nur genutzt, um Einträge zu hinterlassen, sie ist ebenso Spielfeld und Arena, um sich selbst in Szene zu setzen. Die Formen und Motive für die öffentlichen Aktionen von Gruppen sind vielfältig und reichen von spielerischen Einsätzen wie Flashmobs bis zu politischen Kundgebungen oder Besetzungen des öffentlichen Raumes, wie Urban Gardening oder House Squatting.\u003cbr\u003eEine spezifische Art, die Stadtarchitektur zu erleben, ist, sie körperlich nachzuvollziehen, ihre Absätze, Stufen, Mauern wie Geräte eines Turnsaals zu nutzen, sei es mit BMX-Rädern, Skateboards oder in direkter akrobatischer Aneignung, wie bei den Disziplinen Freerunning und Parkour: die ganze Stadt kann so zum Hindernisparcours werden.\u003cbr\u003eSpuren dieser Aktivitäten sind Wachsschichten auf Geländern und Betonkanten zum besseren „Sliden“ respektive Kreidespuren (Boulder Chalk), um besseren „Grip“ zu haben. Daneben aber gibt es auch „Street Player“, die so gut wie überhaupt keine Spuren hinterlassen, sie agieren wie das Eichhörnchen – in Graz bekannt als „Hansi“ – und verstecken ihre Nüsse so gekonnt, dass sie wirklich nur der Eingeweihte finden kann.
